Lake District (Puerto Varas)
After taking the overnight bus to Punta Arenas, I flew to Puerto Montt (about a 2-hour flight). However, before I left, I had booked my hostel in Puerto Varas—not Puerto Montt, because it
was walking distance from a higher end tour company that I had used previously
in San Pedro. Puerto Montt is on the Atlantic
Ocean, whereas Puerto Varas is on lake across an isthmus from Puerto Varas.
That turned out to be the right decision as Puerto Varas is the tourist capital of the Lake District, whereas Puerto Montt is not.
I took a 20 minute cab ride from the airport to Puerto Varas, where I checked into my hostel. I reserved a private room, only because I had to conduct a teleconference the next morning, so I needed to make sure I had the privacy to do that. It was an interesting hostel that was transformed from an old wooden house, where every step made a creaking noise, and the smell of wood permeated the air. It pretty much reminded me of my grandmother's house.
As soon as I settled in, I, of course, headed right to the tour company, where I booked a trip to Chiloe (the island shown in the map above), a boat trip from Petrohue to Peulla, and a bike ride down Volcan Osorno.
The weather was a bit sketchy the next couple days, so I had to arrange the tours accordingly. Since the next day was supposed to be the rainiest, I arranged the Chiloe tour for that day, as it was more of a city tour than a scenic tour. The day after was supposed to be best day out of the three days, so I booked the scenic boat tour for that day.
After I booked my tours, I took a little stroll along the lakeside to take in the sights and gaze at Volcan Osorno across Lago LLanquihue.
Puerto Varas even has a casino, but it seems like just about every city in Chile I have been to has some type of casino.
That night, I prayed that the weather would be good, but as is typical, my prayers for good weather usually go unanswered . . .
